Devotion towards highest public appreciation by optimum implementation of Motor Traffic Act and other rules and regulations through concerted efforts of the motivated staff and deployment of modern technology.

Overview

This institution which commenced its functions on 01 January, 1928 as the Office of the Registrar of Motor Traffic for the purpose of registering unregistered motor vehicles in Sri Lanka was subsequently converted to the Department of Motor Traffic by Motor Traffic Act No. 14 of 1951. An efficient and productive service is being rendered with the objectives of Registration of motor vehicles, Regulation, Issuance of Driving licenses, Road Safety Measures and Environment-friendly usage of motor vehicles in Sri Lanka.

Driving License Division at Werahera and most of the district offices are functioning with online connectivity with Head Office at Narahenpita as the focal point in order to carry out in a qualitative and productive manner , the functions of the Department which have been expanded along with the rapid increase in the usage of motor vehicles in Sri Lanka at present, The future ambitions of the Department is to expeditiously fulfill the expectations/requirements of the beneficiaries at rural/regional level and to further facilitate their expectations with the deployment of modern facilities and new technologies , through the online connectivity between all district offices and the Head Office at Narahenpita.
