The launching of a website (https://seatreservation.railway.gov.lk) and a mobile application for train seat reservation – the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, took place on 22.03.2022 under the patronage of Hon. Dilum Amunugama, the Minister of Transport. This will enable train passengers to book train seats in Sri Lanka from anywhere in the world in the future. The automatic ticket booking system offers the passengers the facility of booking tickets for all the routes. Under this initiative, the issue of tickets has been upgraded to issue of railway license and permits. By now, the entire process of issue of tickets has been digitalized.

In the future, the use of paper will be minimized in the Railway Department as e-tickets will be issued through this system and those tickets will be able to be verified by the QR code.Passengers will be able to purchase tickets on first-class observation compartments, second-class and third-class compartments for up and down journeys in a few steps, on the trains and for destinations allowed for seat reservation. Payments for this facility can be made through several methods including Visa, master and Lanka QR and the reserved tickets can be obtained by visiting the railway stations with m ticketing service and by presenting the National Identity Card or the Passport along with the reference number of the ticket.
