The Ministry of Transport states that the National Council for Road Safety has taken steps to increase compensation for the dependents of those who died in unidentified road accidents from Rs. 200,000 to Rs. 250,000 and for the critically injured victims of these accidents from Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 150,000.

This new compensation scheme will be implemented from 2022 on the instructions of the Minister of Transport, Mrs. PavithraWanniarachchi.

  • Reckless driving - Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Use of Mobile phones while driving
  • Traveling on the road unsafely
  • Wearing non-standard helmets,

have led to the increased road accidents in Sri Lanka.

  • Of the vehicles responsible for fatal accidents, 42% are motorcycles and 12% are lorries and tippers.
  • The data also shows that of the people who are killed in road accidents in a day, 40% are motorcyclists, 30% are pedestrians and 9% are cyclists.
  • Meanwhile, 47% of road accidents occur between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

These facts were revealed at a ceremony organized by the National Council for Road Safety to coincide with the International Day of Remembrance of Road Accident Victims. At this event held on December 1, 2021 at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center, under the patronage of Mrs. Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Minister of Transport, commemorative gifts and cash relief were awarded to the activists who volunteered for ensuring road safety, reduction of road accidents and pedestrian safety and an action plan to reduce road accidents in Sri Lanka by 50%, formulated by the National Council for Road Safety was also unveiled.Also, at this event, compensation was paid to the dependents of those who died in unidentified road accidents and to those who were seriously injured. Speaking at the event Minister, Mrs. Pavithra Wanniarachchi said: “The highest number of accidents are those involving motorcycles. Eight people die in road accidents in this country every day. A national program should be prepared for dealing with this situation............ ” Secretary to the Ministry, Mr. Monty Ranathunga and Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety, Mr. Anton De Mens were also present at the occasion.
