Commencement of the development of the existing single track railway line from Kandy to Sarasavi Uyana as a double track took place under the patronage of Mrs. Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Minister of Transport. The total length of the railway line being developed is 05 km.About 64 train journeys are operated on this way daily, including several office train and school train services. The Department of Railways states that due to the 64 train journeys being operated on this single track route, the railway crossings have to be closed for a longer duration, causing traffic congestion on the highway.Accordingly, the improvement of this railway line into a double track line was initiated in view of the delayed train operations and with a view to reducing the period of closure of the railway crossings. The construction work of this railway line will be completed in two phases and the first phase will be 03 km from Kandy to Getambe and the second phase is 02 km from Getambe to Sarasavi Uyana Railway Station. The Department of Railways has planned to complete the construction of this Rs. 589-million project in two years. Mrs. Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Minister of Transport, commenced the construction work of the double track railway line on November 20 and officially inaugurated the CITY BUS service in Kandy.
